The word “herstory” is a “History Lesson” all by itself! I love playing with words, and so couldn’t resist this title for a product post. BUT, I don’t want to confuse you — this post is about the counted cross stitch sampler, not an improvisational riff on a post-modern neologism. I promise.

😝

Anyways! “History Lesson” features a quote drawn directly from the book  “The Subversive Stitch: Embroidery and the Making of the Feminine” by Rozsika Parker. It’s a great non-fiction read, chock-full of the amazing, empowering, enraging, and history of embroidery, which does indeed seem to encapsulate the history of women.

Since I designed it, every woman-stitcher who’s seen it just nods automatically, knowingly. And a sisterhood is instantly revealed. “History Lesson” is a reminder that misogyny and discrimination have been part of women’ struggle since forever and ever, yes. But, it’s also a tweak at those who do the excruciating mental gymnastics to divide labor into men’s work and women’s—primarily so they can sneer at the latter.

Stitch this one for the feminist stitcher you love, especially if that stitcher is you. And if you need a second dose of that fine, fine feminist fury to get you through, run your eye over this gorgeous version of “Die Mad About It” before you go!
